Member Highlight: Jeff Hanke

It brings me great joy to highlight Jeff. Jeff is a 100 Days of Songwriting veteran. It's been fun watching his music, performing, and producing skills develop and expand over the last couple of years. I want to share a quote from him that I feel sums up his attitude and truly illuminates the spirit of our community: "We're all on different parts of the path, but we're all on the path." I couldn't have said it better. We are all here to do our work and encourage our fellow travelers. Thanks for being a leader in that way, Jeff!

Meet Jeff

Jeff is from Bloomington, MN

What do you do during the day?

I'm retired πŸ™‚ I was in retail sales for 16 years before that.

Do you have any guilty pleasures in music?

There are moments where I really like Sinatra πŸ™‚ (and a lot of the swing/ big bands from the 40's & 50's...) and the Tin Pan Alley writers too the Gerswhin's, Johnny Mercer et al... Good quality music. Our folks had some great music to listen to.

What does your songwriting habit look like?

It's still in development πŸ™‚ but, that being said, I like to try to write daily... if I don't write a song, I at least try to write a riff, do some production work in my DAW and/or practice my guitar playing and singing... I'm around guitars all day which is a tough problem to have being a guitar player πŸ™‚

Who are your influences? How have they shaped you?

Lots of folks inspire me (see the Lynyrd Skynyrd reference above)... Love Ronnie's lyrics and the guitar work is stellar... Other writers that I like: Rodney Crowell, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, etc... I'm definitely a child of the 70's too where I love my hard rock (Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, etc.) found Rory Gallagher when I was a Freshman in high school... he blew me away too..) Good quality songs inspire me... From the simplicity of Simple Man by Skynyrd, to By The Time I Get To Phoenix by Jimmy Webb and everything in between.... It's all about the lyrics and the story.

What challenge are you facing with songwriting?

Showing not telling... I can tell a good story, but I'm not quite there yet when I have to show emotions, colors, feelings and all that good stuff that makes a song great, but I'm getting there .

Tell us an early memory about a song that woke something up inside you.

I used to go to sleep with a radio playing the hits of the 60's so I'd hear all the hits of the time like Windy, Downtown etc. My first real awakening was when I was in Junior High over at a friends and he played One More From The Road by Lynyrd Skynyrd... Heard the power of the guitars and got hooked from there... Also got hooked about the same time on Bachman Turner Overdrive same reason with the powerful guitar... the rest as they say is history πŸ™‚

What Day of 100 is your piece from?

Day 31 of 100, October 5, 2020

Lyrics:

Took Off In The Car and Went For A Drive

Jeff Hanke

Woke up to the sun shining through my window

The curtains swaying gently with the breeze

I knew this day was gonna be just perfect

As I headed out the door with my keys

Well, I dropped down the top and fired up the engine

No destination was coming that I could see

The sun kissed my face all the way to the A&W

Where a Papa burger & root beer fancied me

Took off in the car and went for a drive

The wind in my hair, makes me feel so alive

Just living that good good life

Took off in the car and went for a drive

Put the pedal down and flew down that highway

With Freebird blasting to help me unwind

Those red & blue lights, they snuck up behind me

Slowed me down & put me in a bind

Took off in the car and went for a drive

The wind in my hair, makes me feel so alive

Just living the good good life

Took off in the car and went for a drive

Handcuffed and sitting in that squad car

Watching my car go on that flatbed truck

It’s all part of my new adventures

Now I really need a stroke of good luck

Got myself a ticket with a court date

$300 gets my car back from impound

Paid the bill off with a big ol’ grin (from ear to ear)

Fired it up and threw that hammer down

Took off in the car and went for a drive

The wind in my hair, makes me feel so alive

Just living the good good life

Took off in the car and went for a drive

Took off in the car and went for a drive (2X)
